Trenton police say a 20-year-old city man was shot to death early Thursday, becoming the fifth person gunned down in New Jersey's capital city during the past week.

Police say details on Robert Howard's death remain under investigation, including where he was shot and how many times he was struck. They say a friend took Howard to Capital Health Regional Medical Center around 2:40 a.m., and he died there a short time later.

No arrests have been made in the shootings, and it's not known if any are connected.

The recent spate of shootings has spurred Mayor Tony Mack to reissue his call for state police and federal authorities to help city authorities combat the ongoing violence.
