Some Sandy Evacuees Moved to Monmouth Park

New Jersey is moving some Superstorm Sandy evacuees from shelters to tent-like housing at Monmouth Park, a racetrack.

The facility at Monmouth Park was created to house up to 4,000 out-of-state utility workers and law enforcement officers.

State officials say they needed to move the evacuees to the new location temporarily because some buildings used as shelters had to revert to their normal use.

About 370 people were being housed at the shelters that were closed. But state officials did not know Wednesday how many relocated to the tent-like housing.

State Human Services Department spokeswoman Nicole Brossoie says the structures are akin to trailers covered with tent flaps. They contain bunk beds and are heated.

The complex has portable bathrooms and showers nearby that are heated.
