New Jersey's got a lieutenant governor. And she'd love to drop "lieutenant" from the title and take on the big office.

But do we really need a lieutenant? Jim Gearhart argues the position is a waste — and that two of our best governors in recent history were never elected to the lieutenant OR the governor position.

So he says in the latest edition of his new Jim Gearhart Show podcast — available every Thursday on iTunes, Google Play and the New Jersey 101.5 app.

Not everyone can buy their way into office, like former Gov. Jon Corzine, who donated heavily to party bosses, Jim says. Heck, even Corzine's "retired, sainted" mother in Illinois got in on the action, Jim recalled.

"'Where before I pass on, where can I spend that money that does them most good in the world?' Naturally, anybody who asks that question answers, 'the Bergen County democratic machine.'"
