A bill was introduced last month that I support completely. (Cue the angry smokers screaming at me that it's a violation of their rights.)

S2883 would make it illegal to smoke in a car with children under 17 present. It's about time. There are only a few categories of 'worse parent' than those who do this. Do I need to state the obvious? That second hand smoke is a proven, legitimate danger. (Again, cue the delusional smokers who want to pretend the CDC, the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute, the American Lung Association, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. EPA are all wrong, just to name a few.)

State Sen. Joe Vitale introduced the bill, which calls for a $100 fine for anyone caught smoking in a car with kids. It would not be a primary stop; you'd have to have police contact for some other reason first. There would be no points on your driver's license and no surcharges to your insurance. If you'd like to read the bill for yourself, go here.
