Mercer County officials tell The Times of Trenton that the Cessna 172's landing gear collapsed as it landed around 4:40 p.m. at Trenton-Mercer Airport in Ewing.

The plane sustained some damage, but further details were not disclosed.

It was not immediately clear what caused the landing gear problem. The runway where the plane landed -- one of two at the airport -- was temporarily shut down due to the incident, which was being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

County officials say the plane had departed from Alexandria, Va. Earlier Tuesday. Details on the two people in the plane were not immediately disclosed.
