Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said authorities were searching for a single-engine Piper Malibu aircraft in Dawsonville Monday night. Dawsonville is about 55 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.

Local and federal officials say a portion of the plane has been recovered, and sheriff's officials say at least one person was killed. Their identity hasn't been released.

Bergen says the plane was carrying one person and departed from the Morristown Municipal Airport in New Jersey. The plane was flying to the DeKalb-Peachtree Airport when air traffic controllers lost contact with the pilot.

Bergen says the plane was registered to a Georgia entity and the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
