Authorities say it happened at about 9 p.m. Sunday in Saddle River. Police say the small dog fought with the coyote and escaped. It was taken to an animal hospital and is recovering with its family.

Officers haven't been able to find the coyote. Animal control and the state Division of Wildlife are investigating the incident.

Two people have been attacked by coyotes in New Jersey so far this year.

Police are urging residents not to leave small animals or children outside unattended. They also warn residents whose pets are attacked not to touch any saliva left by the coyote. That could transit rabies if the animal has the virus.
