Should more people be allowed to carry guns in NJ?
So here we go, another weekend of tragedy as a Planned Parenthood is shot up in Colorado leaving a police officer Garrett Swasey and two civilians dead. This is the same state where the attack on Columbine high school saw 12 students and an educator killed. It was also the same state where a man shot up a theatre in Aurora.
Colorado has gun control laws that are so tough that lawmakers imposed 15 round limits on ammunition and background checks on all gun sales and transfers.
President Obama thinks more gun control laws will solve the problem but I ask, how are they doing so far? What would be wrong with being allowed to carry a gun if you have a permit to do so? Why should it be so hard to get one in New Jersey?
I think if people were armed and had the right to carry, maybe some of the shooters would think twice and be deterred from carrying out these acts. As we continue to live under the threat of terrorism wouldn’t being able to carry a firearm make you feel more secure? You would only be able to do so once you passed the test for a permit but wouldn't that offer some piece of mind, knowing that you could protect yourself?
What do you think? Should more people be allowed to carry a firearm in New Jersey with a permit? New Jersey calls our permits a "permit to carry a handgun" and is a "may-issue" state for firearm carry, either openly or concealed.
Permit applicants must "specify in detail the urgent necessity for self-protection, as evidenced by specific threats or previous attacks which demonstrate a special danger to the applicant's life that cannot be avoided by means other than by issuance of a permit to carry a handgun." As a result of this tough standard, New Jersey is effectively a "no issue" state unless one is a retired law enforcement officer. Armed security officers and armored car drivers typically get restricted permits limited to carry while on duty only. A letter of need from the security company is required.
What do you think? Do you think with all the threats of danger that New Jersey needs to allow more people to have a permit to carry a firearm? Take the poll below.
