One of my favorite websites, MentalFloss.com, poses that very tricky question. You probably remember this issue being talked about a few months ago when a Swedish lawmaker proposed making it mandatory that men had to sit when using a public restroom.

A Johns Hopkins' study in 2011 found that 35% of American men sit down while urinating, while MentalFloss reports that almost half of Japanese men do. There are arguments pro and con with lack of splash and comfort being arguments for and the fact that urine is sterile so it doesn't matter where it gets splashed being arguments against. For me, I've always felt that urinals were a pretty useful invention and fulfill the need completely, and the fact that even touching a toilet seat in a public restroom much less sitting on it, skeeves me out.
