The New Jersey Department of Education wants to know if they should start high schools no earlier than 8:30 as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

I would have to go along with George Benson and Whitney Houston when they sing “I believe the children are our future” and if an 8:30 start puts them in the best position to succeed, then I’m all for it! Studies show that the natural sleep cycle for a teenager makes it harder for them to fall asleep before 11pm, so there's no way they're getting enough sleep with their current schedule.

Nicholas Ferroni, a teacher at Union High School, called in to the show to weigh in on this topic. Ferroni's credits include: “Upstander of the Year” by the Human Rights Commission,  “Most Influential Educators,” “Fittest Men in the World,” and let’s not forget “Sexiest Teacher Alive” by People Magazine. Ferroni believes that kids would best benefit from a rotating schedule of classes, so they are not in the same class during their least productive hours.

Nick will be hosting a USA Today panel on education May 10 in Asbury Park.

What do you think the schools should do?
