The days are getting shorter, the temperatures are getting cooler and the vibrant reds, oranges and yellows are beginning to take over.

Fall foliage has started in New Jersey, especially in the northern and western parts of the state, but the entire state should see the color change by next week, according to Townsquare Meteorologist Dan Zarrow.

"The biggest impact weather has on the leaves is how vibrant the colors can actually be," Zarrow said. "Research has shown that the brightest red and orange colors will happen when you get cool, above-freezing nights and sunny days and we've had a lot of those recently. So, right now all directions are pointing toward some very nice colors once they get going in the next week or two."

On average, New Jersey's fall colors peak in late-October and even earlier in the northern and western parts of the state.

Right now, fall foliage is near peak across parts of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont in addition to parts of the Adirondacks and the Catskills in New York.

But, you should definitely enjoy the beautiful scenery while you can.

"All it's going to take is one big storm with some wind, hail or heavy rain and all of those colorful leaves blow off the trees and it'll put a quick end to that autumn sightseeing," Zarrow said.
