Police continue to investigate a serious accident that occurred on Route 78 east in Berkeley Heights Monday evening, and required rescue workers to airlift three victims to hospitals for their injuries.

The crash happened just before 8 p.m. near Exit 43 (Diamond Hill Road). Initially, police shut down both the eastbound and westbound lanes for more than an hour as crews worked to remove victims from the vehicles and get them to waiting medivac helicopters, according to NJ Advance Media.

NJ State Police Sgt Gregory Williams told NJ Advance Media that two women and one man were airlifted to Morristown Medical Center.

The westbound lanes of the roadway were reopened around 10:30 p.m. and eastbound traffic was being directed up the shoulder of the roadway, NJ Advance Media Reported. Delays through the area were about 10 minutes.

The cause of the crash is still be investigated and the extent of the injuries of the victims is still unknown.
