Senate Dems Postpone Christie Override Vote
The Democrat-led state Senate hastily pulled a bill overriding a Gov. Chris Christie veto when it became clear the vote would fall short
The vote was suspended Monday afternoon at 25-11, two votes shy of the number needed for a successful override. There were two abstentions, and two members were absent.
The Legislature has never succeeded at overriding Christie. But Sen. Ray Lesniak (D) the bill’s sponsor, says he’ll try again soon.
The measure under consideration involves criminalizing the confinement of pregnant pigs in crates so small the animals cannot stand up turn around. The offense would be punishable by fines.
In his veto message, Christie said animal care standards are best left to state Agriculture experts.
Democrats accused the likely 2016 presidential candidate of pandering to Iowa farmers.
