Senate Committee Advances Oversight Of Sandy Funds

A New Jersey state Senate committee has advanced a pair of bills that would impose some oversight on Superstorm Sandy-related projects and spending.

One measure would deploy “integrity monitors” to oversee contracts for storm rebuilding projects. The oversight would be optional on smaller projects but mandatory on contracts of $5 million or more.

A second would require quarterly reports and a website detailing how recovery funding is spent.

Both Democrat-sponsored bills were adopted unanimously Thursday by the state Senate Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee. They now advance to the whole Senate.

The bills come on the heels of criticism of a state debris removal contract signed last year after Sandy battered the shore and some riverside communities in northern New Jersey.
