Menendez's attorneys filed motions Monday.

They claim the government improperly presented evidence to a grand jury that should have been off-limits under laws governing legislative activities.

Another motion accuses the government of prosecutorial misconduct for allegedly intimidating witnesses and presenting false testimony to the grand jury.

Menendez was charged in April with conspiracy and multiple counts of bribery for allegedly accepting gifts and campaign donations from a Florida eye doctor in exchange for political favors.

Menendez has claimed he and the doctor, Salomon Melgen, have been friends for years and that he did nothing illegal.

A federal judge in Newark has set a trial date for October.
