See who’s gambling online in NJ, when and for how much

We're getting a closer look at the individuals using New Jersey's online gaming sites and the ones who've been shut out by the sites' geolocation software.

A new report from the Center for Gambling Studies at Rutgers University puts the microscope on 2014, the first full year of internet gambling in the Garden State.

A total of 79,682 players wagered money on the Atlantic City casinos' online platforms, representing just 28 percent of the total number of people who signed up for accounts, the report said.

Males made up more than 76 percent of that total. The greatest proportion of players were in the age group of 25 to 34, a stark difference from the makeup of New Jersey's land-based casinos.

"They're interested in much more high-intensity, high-action digital-type games," Dr. Lia Nower, center director, said of younger players. "If casinos are going to continue to become viable as this older generation ages out of play, they're going to have to attract younger people with different strategies."

An overwhelming majority of players created an account on just one platform.

The northeastern portion of the state accounted for 43 percent of online gamblers. The region also hosts nearly half of the state's population.

Comprising just 13.7 percent of the the population, the state's shore region accounted for 18.59 percent of online gamblers. Less than 5 percent of online gamblers came from the Atlantic City region.

More than 5,000 online casino gamblers said they live outside the Garden State, the report noted. As long as you're 21 years old and within the physical boundaries of the state, you can bet money on the sites.

According to Nower, the sites have blocked people from several states and countries from getting in on the action.

At more than $603 million, the most money was wagered between the hours of 9 p.m. and 12 a.m.

A total of 13,422 gamblers used responsible gaming features such as deposit limits and cool-off periods, the report said. Gamblers in the 25-to-34 range had the highest proportion of users.
