See the Cast of ‘Cruel Intentions’ Then And Now

Since it was published in 1782, the French novel ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ has been retold time and time again in various artistic mediums.
Among one of the more unique adaptations of Choderlos de Laclos’ notorious book is the 1999 film ‘Cruel Intentions,’ which sets the tale of sex, gamesmanship and betrayal in present day New York City and makes the characters wealthy prep-school students.
You need a sexy young cast to pull off such a plot, and ‘Cruel Intentions’ starred good-looking up-and-comers Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon. Check in on what all the reckless kids of ‘Cruel Intentions’ are up to today below.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kathryn Merteuil

Then: In âCruel Intentionsâ Gellar played rich girl Kathryn Merteuil, who bets her step-brother Sebastian that he can’t seduce the  headmaster’s daughter. Gellar had burst onto the scene three years earlier as the title character on the long-running TV series âBuffy The Vampire Slayer.â
Now: Gellarâs latest TV series, âThe Ringer,â was just cancelled. In September, the 35-year-old had her second child, a boy, with husband Freddie Prinze Jr.
Ryan Phillippe, Sebastian Valmont

Then: Phillippe was relentless cad Sebastian Valmont in âCruel Intentions.â Previously he had starred with Gellar in âI Know What You Did Last Summer.’
Now: The 38-year-old is currently appearing on ‘Damages’ as Channing McClaren. Later this year he will star in the comedy ‘Straight Aâs.’ Phillippe married his âCruel Intentionsâ co-star Reese Witherspoon in 1999, but that high-profile union ended in a 2006 divorce.
Reese Witherspoon, Annette Hargrove

Then: In ‘Cruel Intentions,’ Witherspoon played Annette Hargrove, the prim headmaster’s daughter. The-then 21-year-old was already well-known for her star turns in films like ‘Pleasantville’ and ‘Freeway.’ She followed up ‘Cruel Intentions’ with ‘Election,’ a tart comedy which scored Witherspoon a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress.
Now: Witherspoon, an Academy Award winner for portraying June Carter in ‘Walk The Line,’ starred in ‘This Means War’ earlier this year. Next up for the 36-year-old is the crime-drama ‘Devilâs Knot.’ In 2011, Witherspoon married talent agent Jim Toth and the couple just welcomed their first child, named after Reese’s home state of Tennessee.
Selma Blair, Cecile Caldwell

Then: Blair played the immature Cecile Caldwell who becomes a pain in Sebastian and Kathryn’s game. It was the biggest role to date for Blair, who started her career on an episode of the Nickelodeon series ‘Pete and Pete.’
Now: Blair stars opposite Charlie Sheen in the FX series ‘Anger Management.’â The 40-year-old was also the lead in two movies — ‘Replicas’ and ‘Columbus Circle’ — in 2012.
Joshua Jackson, Blaine Tuttle

Then: Jackson dyed his hair blond to play the conniving Blaine Tuttle in âCruel Intentions.â The role of a young gay man was quite the departure from his time as nice guy Pacey Witter on ‘Dawsonâs Creek.’
Now: The Canadian-born actor is one of the leads of the TV series ‘Fringe.’ He is in a long-term relationship with actress Diane Kruger.
Eric Mabius, Greg McConnell

Then: You might remember Mabius as sexually confused jock Greg McConnell. Before that, he’d played small roles in movies like ‘The Minus Men’ and âWelcome To The Dollhouse.’
Now: Mabius played Daniel Meade for five years on ‘Ugly Betty.’ Since that show went off the air in 2010, the 41-year old has popped up on ‘Franklin & Bash,’ ‘The Client List’ and ‘Political Animals.’
Sean Patrick Thomas, Ronald Clifford

Then: Thomas played Cecile’s crush, music teacher Ronald Clifford. He had made his onscreen debut three years earlier on an episode of ‘New York Undercover,â and went on to star in the TV series ‘The District.’
Now: In 2012, Thomas reunited with Sarah Michelle Gellar, playing Solomon Vessida on ‘The Ringer.’ The 41-year-old has two children with his wife, actress Aonika Laurent.
Tara Reid, Marci Greenbaum

Then: Reid had a memorable turn as Marci Greenbaum, the daughter of Sebastianâs therapist, in ‘Cruel Intentions.’ That same year Reid played her most famous role — Vicky in ‘American Pie’ — and the year before she made Jeff Bridges an indecent offer as Bunny Lebowski in ‘The Big Lebowski.’
Now: A tabloid queen thanks to her frequent DUIs and party girl lifestyle, Reids career got a bit of a boost when she reprised the role that made her famous in ‘American Reunion.â She will also appear in the upcoming comedy ‘Last Call’ and can thank Amanda Bynes for taking some of the gossip heat off of her.
