Sandy Victims Rate Gov’t/Insurance Response [AUDIO]
With a year to reflect, New Jersey residents displaced by Superstorm Sandy are rating the responsiveness of government and insurance companies after the storm.
The Monmouth University Poll respondents, each forced out of their homes for at least a month, gave the best marks to local government. The majority of respondents (55 percent) said their local town government has been at least somewhat helpful, compared to 42 percent who said the opposite.
The marks go downhill from there.
“Fifty-one percent say the federal government has been helpful. Forty-seven percent say they have not been helpful,” explained Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute. “The state government is seen as less supportive, and county government is at the bottom.”
Insurance providers received more negative feedback than most levels of government. More than 50 percent of impacted respondents said their insurance company hasn’t been helpful. Community organizations received better marks, as well as the respondents’ family, friends and neighbors.
Nearly all impacted residents said they registered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and most said the process was either very easy or somewhat easy.
Three-in-four registered for ReNew Jersey Stronger assistance, made up of state-level programs.
Murray said today’s poll only “scratches the surface” of Monmouth’s goal with these respondents. The same group will be followed as recovery continues, and similar polls can be expected in the future.
