Rutgers unveiled new football uniforms for next season, a sleek design that draws on the Scarlet Knights' rich history as the birthplace of college football.

The Big East Conference school and Nike showed off the new uniforms in New York Tuesday, noting that just as knights of old were more successful in battle if they had better gear, the team believes that the better the uniforms, the stronger the player -- both mentally and physically.

The new uniforms feature knight-like designs such as metallic accents and "battle scars" throughout the fabrication. The Scarlet Knights' Nike Pro Combat football jersey features added inset ribbing around the shoulders that are made to look like iron plates.

Rutgers is coming off a 9-4 season in which it defeated Iowa State, 27-13, in the Pinstripe Bowl. It would prove to be coach Greg Schiano's last game, as he took the same job with the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Jan. 27. He was replaced by former assistant Kyle Flood three days later.
