Robert Barchi spoke with reporters Tuesday, the first day of classes at the 60,000-student school. He previously was president of Thomas Jefferson University and served as a top administrator at the University of Pennsylvania.

About $18 million of Rutgers' $60 million athletic budget now comes from the university. Barchi says he wants to keep providing athletic scholarships, worth about $10 million per year, but says the school should eventually eliminate other subsidies.

Barchi also says the university must do a better job at raising money, particularly for scholarship funds and endowed faculty chairs.
