Word comes Thursday, the same day University President Robert Barchi told a New Jersey Assembly budget plan that he didn't believe the disgraced coach was entitled to a severance.

Rice was fired a little more than two weeks ago after a video of him throwing basketballs at players during practices, shoving them and uttering anti-gay slurs was shown on ESPN.

The scandal also led to the departure of the university's lawyer and athletic director.

The university says Rice's settlement is worth less than half of what's called for under his contract for being terminated.

Barchi says the agreement "is in the best interests of the university."
