NEW BRUNSWICK — A review of parking records revealed Rutgers University made nearly $5 million in parking tickets during the 2014-2015 school year.

MyCentralJersey.com reported that the school issued about 90,000 tickets per year at its campuses in Piscatway, New Brunswick, Newark and Camden — a much higher number of tickets than any of the state's other nine other colleges.

Jack Molenaar, head of the Department of Transportation at Rutgers, said part of the reason for the high number of tickets being issued is that students don't buy parking permits, according to the report. The cost of a parking permit and the fines for not displaying a parking pass make it cheaper to risk a parking fine, according to Molenaar.
