Route 287 North in Edison was severely backed up Wednesday afternoon after an accident involving three trucks and two cars, State Police said.

The crash was first reported shortly after 4 p.m., and three lanes of the highway were closed during much of the response. State Police said at 5:30 they had just reopened all but one lane, but traffic remained a serious issue.

Police weren't yet able to say what caused the accident or if anyone was hurt.
