Rowan University has spent nearly $1 million to purchase a lavish estate for its president to live in the Courier-Post reports.
The school says President Ali Houshmand's off-campus duties have outgrown the 2,600-square-foot Merganser Court residence in a Glassboro 55-and-older community where he previously lived, according to the report.
The newspaper quoted a university spokesman saying University functions in the age-restricted neighborhood were causing inconveniences for neighbors — leading to the $925,000 purchase of a home nearly twice the size of the old one.
A listing on ColdwellBankerHomes.com describes the 5,800 square foot, custom-built home — with four bedrooms and 3.5 baths — as being "nestled in one of the most sought after neighborhoods in Mullica Hill," with manicured landscaping and a wooded backdrop.
"As you enter this home you are greeted by a circular stairwell in the foyer. You will instantly notice the exotic hardwood floors that cover much of the first floor," the listing states. "The gourmet kitchen features two ovens, full-size built in subzero refrigerator and separate freezer, built in beverage center, a wolf range and a breakfast area."
It continues: "The master suite is a must-see, featuring a sitting area, dressing area, laundry room, and huge walk-in closet with custom cabinetry. There are three fireplaces throughout which are in the kitchen, master bedroom (two-sided) and the great room."
A listing on Zillow.com estimated its sale price at $968,566, subject to $24,735 in property taxes in 2015.
The home sits on more than 1.4 square acres. It was last sold in 2007 for more than $1.2 million, according to the Zillow listing.
