A repaving project begins Monday night on Route 78. It will close two lanes weekdays for the next several weeks overnights until the start of the morning commute.

The milling and paving will start with the eastbound local lanes near Exit No. 41 for Plainfield Ave in Berkeley Heights and continue about six miles to the Shunpike Road overpass in Springfield. The project continues in the express lanes from Shunpike Road to Stuyvesant Avenue, west of Exit 52 for the Garden State Parkway in Union.

The work will switch to the westbound express lanes at Stuyvesant Avenue, west of Exit 52 in Union and continue west for approximately two miles to Route 124 in Union.

The work starts at 8 p.m. each night and will go until 5 a.m. the next morning. The project includes utility relocations, curb work, and bridge deck repairs plus electrical work on the shoulder.

The state-funded project should be done by late 2017.
