An accident involving a tractor trailer closed down eastbound Route 3 near MetLife Stadium for much of Tuesday morning's early commute.

The Record reports a car being driven westbound by an unidentified 19-year-old from Jersey City crossed the grass median around 6:30 a.m. and went into a metal divider, flipping over into eastbound traffic. A tractor trailer than stopped short to avoid the vehicle, causing 3 other cars to collide.

The 19-year-old suffered sever lower body injuries and was taken by medical helicopter to a hospital.

All lanes on the eastbound side were closed for about 2 hours for cleanup of the accident and a fuel spill plus an investigation, according to New Jersey Fast Traffic's Bob Williams. "Route 80 and the New Jersey Turnpike were good alternatives to get to the the Lincoln Tunnel," said Williams, who noted that NJ Transit buses were delayed by at least 30 minutes.
