BRIDGEWATER — An overnight crash on Route 22 in Bridgewater killed two pedestrians early Thursday morning.

Bridgewater Police said a 29-year-old male and 23-year-old woman were in the left lane near Adamsville Road just after 3 a.m. and hit by a 2004 Toyota Sienna driven by a 29-year-old male. The two pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, according to police.

The scene of the crash was in front of the Bridgewater Diner in the wide median which separates the east and westbound lanes. According to its website the diner closed at midnight. A hotel is located across the highway accessible from the right lane.

Police did not disclose the identities of anyone involved in the crash.

The  westbound remained closed until 9 a.m. between Route 287 and Gaston Avenue for an investigation of the crash, which took place near the Bridgewater Diner. The ramp from northbound Route 287 to Route 22 west was also closed.

NJ Transit tweeted bus service through the area will be affected with unspecified delays.
