An oil spill on Route 1 in Trenton closed down the road for much of the morning commute, backing up traffic across the Delaware River and into Pennsylvania.

New Jersey Fast Traffic's Jill Myra said the spill at New York Avenue caused traffic to back up on Route 29 and 129 in Trenton and all the way back to Route 95 near the Oxford Valley Mall. "That's a big delay you don't see very often," said Myra. Route 95 northbound was also backed up to that area with extra volume.

A spokesman for the Trenton Fire Department said a piece of metal came off the road and pierced the saddle tank of a tractor trailer causing about 75 gallons of fuel to spill onto the road. The road was closed to allow a Department of Environmental Protection hazardous material team to clean up the spill. The truck was the only vehicle involved and there were no injuries according to the spokesman.

One lane was reopened around 8:45 a.m. but the delays were very slow to clear Myra said.
