GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has raised about $400,000 in New Jersey for a candidate other than himself.

Romney was in Bernardsville on Wednesday to headline a fundraiser for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joe Kyrillos.

The campaign stop was payback for Kyrillos, who chaired the former Massachusetts governor's 2008 White House bid in New Jersey. Gov. Chris Christie, a longtime Kyrillos pal, endorsed Romney in October.

The $5,000 per plate fundraiser, held at a private home in Bernardsville, drew about 80 people.

Kyrillos is challenging incumbent Sen. Bob Menendez. The Democrat is bringing former President Bill Clinton to New Jersey for a June 1 fundraiser.

Menendez had $9.5 million on hand for the race as of March 31. Kyrillos reported having raised $1.75 million through the first quarter.
