Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney paid about $3 million in federal income taxes in 2010.

Romney's tax returns show most of his $21.7 million income came rom his investments. He also gave nearly $3 million combined to haritable causes and the Mormon Church, helping reduce his effective tax rate to about 14 percent.

The former Massachusetts governor has been under pressure inrecent weeks to release his tax returns. Rival Newt Gingrich made public his returns on Saturday, showing he paid almost $1 million in income taxes.

Romney's taxes were first reported early Tuesday morning in The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, which received an advanced copy of the candidate's return.

Romney's campaign plans to discuss his returns in depth with reporters Tuesday morning.
