The main casino workers' union in Atlantic City is trying to force a public vote on whether casinos can limit the jobs of some employees to four to six years.

Local 54 of Unite-HERE filed petitions with the City Clerk Thursday seeking a referendum on a proposed local ordinance that would require casino workers be terminated for "just cause." The measure also calls for making sure employees get sick leave.

The $2.4 billion recently-opened Revel is the only Atlantic City casino to impose such limits. It says it needs to ensure that customer-service employees don't become indifferent to the needs of customers.

The union tells The Associated Press it expects the proposal to be challenged in court, but is confident of its legality.
