Resource center opens for affected casino workers

In response to the recent closures of Revel and Showboat in Atlantic City, a one-stop resource center opens its doors Wednesday to the thousands left without a job.

The Atlantic City Unites Here Center, spearheaded by the local casino workers’ union, runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays through Sept. 10 at the Atlantic City Convention Center.

Resources are available for unemployment benefits, healthcare coverage, food, utilities and any unanswered questions.

“All of this is very important so that we can come together and help people that are in need,” said Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian.

Showboat Atlantic City ceased operations Aug. 31, and Revel Casino Hotel went dark just two days later.

More than 35 staffers from the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development will be on hand for the weeklong resource center.

On the final day, in a separate section of the convention center, the state is hosting a job fair with 40 employers who have open positions available.

“This is a targeted re-employment effort that we hope will help the workers affected by the casino closings quickly transition into new jobs,” said LWD Commissioner Harold Wirths. “It is very important for the casino workers to immediately pursue new employment options, without delay.”

Another event will be held later this month for workers affected by the closure of Trump Plaza, scheduled for Sept. 16.
