‘Suspicious package’ shuts down 2 NJ Transit lines, turns out to be shoes
RIDGEWOOD — A suspicious package shut down two NJ Transit lines Thursday morning.
NJ Transit tweeted the suspension of the Bergen/Main line and the Port Jervis line in both directions was due to "police activity" at the Ridgewood station. At about 10:20, NJ Transit said service had resumed, with an hour-long delay.
The package was located between two rail lines, under a bench on the Franklin Avenue overpass, according to NorthJersey.com. ABC 7 reported the station was evacuated.
NJ Transit spokeswoman Lisa Torbic told New JErsey 101.5 the "package" turned out to be a pair of shoes under a bench with a wire coming out.
NJ Transit advised riders to use alternative transportation and said its buses as well as private carriers would accept rail tickets and passes system-wide. Those policies were still being honored even after service resumed Thursday morning.
This is a breaking story. Check back for additional details.
