Report on NJ Transit Sandy Performance Released

An independent report on New Jersey Transit's performance in Superstorm Sandy says the agency must prepare better for the next big storm.

The report by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service was released Tuesday.

It says vulnerability assessments are needed for facilities including maintenance yards that flooded last Oct. 29. The report says flood models are needed for all key facilities.

NJ Transit was criticized for not moving rail cars and locomotives out of yards in Kearny and Hoboken. They suffered more than $100 million in damage.

The report says NJ Transit needs to communicate better with the public. It praised the agency for how it took its rail and bus lines out of service before the storm and restored them afterward.

NJ Transit says it's acting on the recommendations.
