After nine months of probing the scandal, NBC News reports that federal investigators have found no direct link between Gov. Chris Christie and the Fort Lee lane closures.

While officials declined comment, the report stands to vindicate Christie, who has maintained all along that he did not know about the plot in advance nor did he order the lanes to be closed last September.

However, Democrats here in New Jersey plan to press on with their legislative investigation. Chairman John Wisniewski (D-Middlesex) said whatever the U.S. Attorney does or does not find will have no bearing on his panel's work.

"This is not a Chris Christie investigation," he said in a statement. "It's an investigation as to why this happened and who authorized it. As a consequence, this does not change our position."
