PSE&G Won’t Report Customer Info to Credit Agency
New Jersey’s largest utility will not turn over customer payment histories to a credit reporting agency. Public Service Electric & Gas agreed to withdraw its proposal to settle a lawsuit filed by the state Division of Rate Counsel.
The utility announced in 2010 that it would notify Experian about payment histories.
However, Rate Counsel Director Stefanie Brand sued, saying PSE&G has no right to disclose individual customer information to a third party without the customer’s consent.
PSE&G notes that it previously has and continues to provide a credit report agency with credit information on former customers whose service has been discontinued, if the customer is no longer at the premises and is in arrears on payments.
