The Trenton vice enforcement unit  will now be part of the Prosecutor's Office Special Investigators Unit and be considered police department employees but will answer to Prosecutor Joseph Bocchini, Police Director Ralph Rivera Jr.told the Times of Trenton.

Recent layoffs that left the Trenton police department "devastated,' according to Rivera, led to the merger. "The numbers that are going into this new unit will double the numbers Trenton has now, and probably more," Bocchini told the newspaper. It could even lead to additional county-city partnerships.

Much of the work the new unit does will be in Trenton but will do work all over Mercer County. "The drug dealer may operate in Trenton, but our intelligence leads us to believe they may live outside Trenton," Bocchini told the Times of Trenton.

The new unit will be ready to operate by the end of next week at the latest.
