Prosecutor reviewing stance on gun case
MAYS LANDING (AP) — A New Jersey prosecutor is reviewing how to handle the case of a woman who is facing prison time after bringing into the state a gun she owns legally in Pennsylvania.
The Press of Atlantic City reports Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain has told a judge that he is considering whether it would be appropriate to allow Shaneen Allen into a diversion program that would allow her to avoid prosecution.
The 27-year-old from Philadelphia was arrested in Hamilton Township last year after telling a state trooper she had a gun and a concealed carry permit.
The premit is not recognized in New Jersey. Violating the law means automatic jail time.
McClain's decision to reevaluate the case comes as lawmakers push for more discretion for judges in weapons cases.
