Prosecutors say a Maryland man gunned down on a Carteret street this week was targeted by his alleged assailant.

Daniel Gillens of Newark was charged with murder and weapons offenses in the death of Deonte Shackleford, a 26-year-old Baltimore resident.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan announced the arrest Saturday. But he didn't say why authorities believe the 21-year-old Gillens targeted Shackleford, who was in New Jersey to visit relatives in Carteret.

Kaplan says the shooting occurred around 7:20 p.m. Friday.

Carteret police who happened to be on routine patrol in the area heard gunshots and soon found Shackleford wounded on a sidewalk. They also saw Gillens running from the scene and captured him after a short pursuit.

Shackleford died a short time later at a hospital.
