Press of Atlantic City Goes Up for Sale

Pittsburgh-based Abarta Inc. says it needs to focus on businesses with higher growth potential.

Abarta CEO John Bitzer made the announcement Monday with what he called "a heavy heart." The newspaper has been in the family for 60 years.

Bitzer says he's certain the decision is in the best interest of both the family firm and the newspaper. He says The Press has limitations on growth that will be easier for other companies to eliminate than for the family business.

As part of the move, Jim Hopson has taken over as interim publisher, replacing Keith Dawn. Hopson was publisher of The Press from 1989 to 1994.
