SPARTA — A pregnant woman was badly hurt, suffering broken bones in a head-on crash along Route 15 — which has lanes separated by a grass median — with a 20-year-old driver, police say.

According to police, Tuesday morning, they arrived on Route 15 Southbound to find a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer traveling Route 15 northbound, driven by 20-year-old Joshua M. Buttacavole from Lodi, and also occupied by 20-year-old Nicholas M. Baya of Lodi, lost control and rolled into the grass median before striking a 2012 Jeep Liberty head-on in the southbound lane.

The driver of the Jeep Liberty was 36-year-old Melissa D. Scevola, who is six months pregnant, from Hamburg.

Scevola was trapped in her vehicle before being extricated with assistance of the Sparta Fire Department, Sparta EMS, St. Clare’s Medics and the Ogdensburg Fire Department, police said. She was then transported to Morristown Medical Center.

Scevola suffered broken bones and lacerations, but there were no reported issues with her pregnancy, police said.

Buttacavole suffered no injuries and was released after questioning, police said. Baya was transported to St. Clare’s Denville to be treated for minor injuries.

Both sides of Route 15 were closed during parts of the inviestigation — the southbound lanes for more than five hours.

The crash is still under investigation, and police say Buttacavole could face charges.
