There was a settlement in an interesting lawsuit in New Jersey. In Ocean Township, police officer Kathleen J. Delanoy served for 13 years. She became pregnant. Officer Delanoy claimed there was an "unwritten policy" that someone in her situation would be put on light or modified duty. The department had other ideas. Delanoy said she was advised after her pregnancy "there is no light/modified duty for pregnant officers."

It ended up in a discrimination suit which has now been settled in officer Delanoy's favor for $51,000 plus lawyer fees. Read more on the story here.

It seems reasonable to me that a female officer who becomes pregnant should not be expected to put the fetus in jeopardy by performing the same high risk, dangerous duty as she had for 13 years. Or is this exactly why some people would have a problem with females serving as police officers to begin with?
