Power Problems Remain In NJ After October Storm

New Jersey’s two major utilities are working toward the goal of restoring electricity lost in the October snowstorm to most of their customers by midnight Thursday.

There were 97,000 homes and businesses still without power as of late Wednesday night. That’s down from about 700,000 during the height of the storm on Saturday.

JCP&L still has 67,000 customers without service, while PSE&G has 30,000.

More than a dozen school districts in northern New Jersey remain closed Wednesday. Some districts are worried that they’ll use all their anticipated snow days before the winter even starts.

Commuters got some relief when normal rail service resumed late Wednesday afternoon on NJ Transit’s Morris & Essex Line between Lake Hopatcong and Mount Olive. But only bus service was occurring between Mount Olive and Hackettstown.
