Postman a dog’s best friend? Pit bull rescued after hours stuck in marsh

TOMS RIVER — Three girls in a kayak and an observant postal carrier teamed up to rescue a 10-month-old puppy stuck in the mud for hours on Saturday in Silver Bay in Toms River.

Owner Mike Incremona told New Jersey101.5 that at first his family, down for the weekend at their summer home,  didn't know where Remy went until they watched video from their backyard security camera. "At about 1:51 a.m. we saw him dive into the water. I searched the water and I couldn't find him," said Incremona.

Several hours later, Incremona said 3 girls and 2 boys in a kayak saw Remy struggling in the mud of Silver Marsh when postal carrier Al Font came by as he delivered the mail. Font remembered seeing a lost dog poster few blocks back and called out the dog's name.

"The dog right away started looking at me and he knew his name," Font told New Jersey 101.5, who said Incremona told him that Remy must have paddled over to the marsh and gotten stuck.

Font then phoned Incremona, who was ecstatic when he arrived and saw Remy alive.

"He had tears in his eyes and couldn't believe his dog was alive," Font said.

"It was fate. They found the dog, I found the sign and we all connected the timeline" in order to reunite the pair, Font said.

Incremona on Tuesday said Remy is "a little traumatized but he's all right. His health is good, just a little shaken up" the Hasbrouck Heights landscaper and construction worker said on Tuesday. He plans to gate the yard in and get him microchipped.

One of the girls in the kayak was the niece of an old friend from Font's hometown of Jersey City, and they were down the shore for the weekend according to the 16-year postal service veteran.

It was not the Brick resident's first taste of excitement on his postal route. In May, 2013, Font pulled a woman out of her car on his route in Holiday City.

"She thought her car was just smoking like it was overheating. It was an electrical fire in her dashboard. I was able to get her out of the car just in time. We were basically stepping on the lawn across the street and the car just blew up," Font said.
