How often is it that someone down on their luck finds a treasure trove belonging to someone else, and returns it.

Same thing with Candace Scott.

She couldn't believe her eyes. Tens of thousands of dollars just sitting on the road. Ask yourself, what would you do?

The unemployed College Station teacher says she did was she believes was her only option. She returned $20,000 she found on the road to the bank to which it belongs.
Tuesday morning started pretty uneventful for Candace Scott. The unemployed teacher had just dropped off her cat at the vet when she turned left on Fitch Road at Arrington and ran over a plastic bag.

"I drove over it and I went, 'I think that's money, there's probably money in there.' Then I thought, 'You didn't get a good look at it, it's probably a dirty diaper,'" Scott said.

Something told her to turn back. And when she did, she realized it was a Chase Bank plastic bag filled with money, possibly north of $20,000.

"Did you think, 'Maybe I just drive home?'" we asked Scott.

"I never did, it was never that," she replied.

The money inside the bag was apparently tightly bound $100 bills destined for one of Chase's ATMs. Needless to say, the bank is very grateful.

Scott returned the money to the Chase Bank. The bank gave her a $500 gift card and released a statement to Eyewitness News that read: "We are very grateful to Ms. Scott for stepping up, doing the right thing and returning the bag dropped by our courier service. It is that neighborly spirit that makes Texas a great place to live."

Now Scott is hoping her good deed will pay off. Having recently moved to College Station, the only thing she wants is a teaching job in town.

"There is some reason for me finding that money. I don't know what it is yet," she said.

Scott says she hopes someone will see this story, see that she has good character and give her a chance at teaching middle school, something she's done for a dozen years before moving to College Station.

God bless her, and hopefully it all turns out well.

However in my eyes she’s the richer for it. The money, although it would have paid some bills mattered not, for her soul is worth a lot more.
