The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has its hands full these days with people trying to sneakinto New York without paying. An increasing number of truckers and other motorists have been stopped while trying to beat the tolls at the George Washington Bridge and other crossings.

They're doing this by altering their license plates using tape, grease, tar or other substances.

In one case in November, a man used a cable in his truck cab to flip his license plate as he went through an E-ZPass lane. Port Authority Police Officer Jason Malice says he frequently pulls over people with previous violations.

Much of the increased activity has come since tolls on the bridges and tunnels were raised in September.
