JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -- Commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have revolted against a proposal to rebuild New York City's decrepit bus terminal for an estimated $8 to $10 billion and are demanding cheaper options.

That's more than twice as costly as the $4 billion World Trade Center transportation hub. The plan was presented to the board Thursday after the agency spent months studying how to replace the 65-year-old terminal.

A building expert says the project is so expensive because the terminal must be built with the heaviest structural steel pieces in the world.

The terminal is the nation's busiest bus station. It's an infamous eyesore for commuters with its cracked floors, crumbling ceiling tiles and overcrowding during rush hour.

The new terminal would not be built until 2030.
