‘Pop Goes The World’ by Men Without Hats: Doyle’s ‘Not-So-Top-10′ playlist
Men Without Hats are generally considered to be a “one-hit wonder” of the 80s, but they actually had TWO top-20 hits.
They were a Canadian new wave band that delivered one of the biggest hits of 1983 with “The Safety Dance” from their debut album, “Rhythm of Youth”. That song peaked at #3, a lofty position they would never approach again. They released a rather poorly received follow up album in 1984 and then found a modicum of success in 1987. The song I requested was the title track of that album: “Pop Goes The World”; and it was their final hit, cresting at #20 in 1988. They disbanded a couple of years later and then reformed without much success.
Oh, and, no, Big Joe didn’t play it.
