State officials say an anesthesiologist who has been performing major back surgery in northern New Jersey without proper training has voluntarily agreed to restrictions on his medical license.

The state Board of Medical Examiners approved a consent order with Dr. Richard Kaul on Tuesday. That came after authorities said they would seek to temporarily suspend Kaul's license.

The agreement calls for the 47-year-old Kaul, who owns the New Jersey Spine and Rehabilitation Center in Pompton Lakes, to immediately stop performing or assisting in any and all spinal surgical procedures. But he will be allowed to perform minor surgical procedures.

Kaul was barred from practicing medicine in England after a woman whom he administered anesthesia to during routine dental work suffered a heart attack and died in 1999.
