Over the last few days, we’ve heard allegations of hazing incidents going on at Sayreville HS and their lauded football program.

The incident came to a boil this evening when the school superintendent decided to cancel the remainder of the football season citing credible information that the program was rife with a culture of intimidation.

Superintendent Rich Labee made the announcement during a meeting with parents of football players.

"We can set the standard right now for all kids for all school districts in Middlesex County, in the state and in the nation that we are not going to stand around and allow kids to do this to one another," Labbe said. "We are going to start holding our students responsible for doing the right thing and reporting these kinds of behaviors. I believe with every fiber of my body that the only way we are going to stop bullying is if we get the kids to go to an adult or to the authorities."

As you’d expect, some were not happy at all with the decision as they feel the ones who did not participate in the hazing shouldn’t have to suffer.

However since there is an ongoing criminal investigation – one wonders just how the program can continue – especially in light of the possibility that coaches may be involved.

Labbe added that the district will conduct its own investigation and se whether or not other programs at the school were involved.

This is a community which prides itself on its football program. Sayreville has won three sectional titles over the past four years. Canceling the season will put an end to their string of an impressive 20 consecutive playoff appearances.

Pity – isn’t it!
